![]() ![]() ![]() And I tend to avoid plot summary when I can. ![]() And yet that exhilarating pace is what Jeff Parker is "doing" with the "Thunderbolts." But it's impossible to write about without resorting to plot summary, since it's all plot driven. The issues just pick the reader up and send him or her on a race to the finish, with the ground constantly shifting beneath our feet, and the finish line shifting further and further away. Parker's "Thunderbolts" comics race along so quickly they don't have time for any sort of meta-commentary or any clear declarations on exactly what it is they're doing, narratively. Or saying something about some theme or narrative technique. Parker's stories are rapid-fire plot spectacles, and most of the comics I tend to write about in this column are comics that are "doing something" with the medium or at least a particular genre. ![]() ![]() ![]() Prior to writing fiction full time, Stacy worked as a copywriter and brand strategist. Zunon’s collages, with their vivid colors, elegant patterns, and varied textures-especially those from actual plastic bags-provide a beautiful and authentic entry into the story. Author Paul has written a clear and sensitive account of Ceesay and her fellow activists’ ingenious solution to the plastic bag problem (they wash them, cut the bags into strips, and crochet the strips into small purses to sell in the city). In Njau, Gambia, a young woman named Isatou Ceesay became concerned when she learned that these non-biodegradable objects, discarded after breakage and tears made them no longer usable, were attracting disease-bearing insects and that domestic animals often died after eating the bags, she decided to do something about it. "In the 1980s in the cities of Gambia, a switch from using baskets made of natural materials to non-biodegradable plastic bags led to a problem: roadsides began to be choked by ever-growing piles of plastic bags. ![]() ![]() ![]() Parent Company: Lerner Publishing Group Read a Description of One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia Book Description: List Price: $19.99 Format: Library Binding, 32 pages ![]() ![]() In 1902, Heart of Darkness was published in a separate volume along with two other stories by Conrad. It is on one level about a voyage into the heart of the Belgian Congo, and on another about the journey into the soul of man. The story is told in the words of Charlie Marlow, a seaman, and filtered through the thoughts of an unidentified listening narrator. Conrad was actually sent up the Congo River to an inner station to rescue a company agent-not named Kurtz but Georges-Antoine Klein-who died a few days later aboard ship. Heart of Darkness is based on Conrad's firsthand experience of the Congo region of West Africa. At the time of its writing (1890), the Polish-born Conrad had become a naturalized British citizen, mastered the English language, served for ten years in the British merchant marines, achieved the rank of captain, and traveled to Asia, Australia, India, and Africa. It has since been called by many the best short novel written in English. ![]() The work was well received by a somewhat perplexed Victorian audience.
